Table 1 Case definitions used during the outbreak investigation

From: Outbreak of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever with atypical clinical presentation in the Karak District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

1.

Suspected case

Patient with sudden onset of illness and fever for more than 3 days and less than 10 days in Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) endemic area or those among contact with livestock.

Probable case

Suspected case with thrombocytopenia and any two of the following: petechial or purpuric rash, epistaxis, hematemesis, haemoptysis, blood in stools, ecchymosis, gum bleeding, other haemorrhagic symptom.

3.

Confirmed case

CCHF confirmed from NIH through ELISA/PCR
